What Ceramic Coatings Do
Ceramic coatings provide hydrophobic protection (water beads and rolls off), UV resistance to slow paint oxidation and color fading, chemical resistance against bird droppings and industrial fallout, and gloss enhancement that adds depth and clarity to the paint finish.
What Ceramic Coatings Don't Do
Ceramic coatings are not impact protection. They won't prevent stone chips or physical abrasion the way PPF does. For high-impact areas, PPF is still the right choice.
Longevity
Professional-grade ceramic coatings last 2–5 years depending on the product, application quality, and how the aircraft is stored and operated. Hangar-stored aircraft typically see longer coating life than those parked outside.
PPF vs. Ceramic Coating: Which One?
The honest answer is: both, used strategically. Use PPF on high-impact zones where physical protection matters — leading edges, nose, prop arc, and lower fuselage. Use ceramic coating on the rest of the aircraft — fuselage, wings, tail surfaces — where you want hydrophobic protection, UV resistance, and easier cleaning without the cost of full-aircraft PPF.
Many aircraft owners do exactly this: PPF on the vulnerable areas, ceramic coating everywhere else. It's the most cost-effective approach to comprehensive paint protection.
The Installation Matters
Both PPF and ceramic coatings require proper surface preparation to perform correctly. The paint must be decontaminated, polished, and free of defects before either product is applied. Skipping prep leads to poor adhesion, trapped contaminants, and premature failure.
